We successfully completed a four-month program supported by USAID Jal Jangal, titled "Allo Processing and Textile Production Program," across three districts in Karnali Province. The program aimed to engage 2160 local micro entrepreneurs and create additional income source through the sustainable processing and production of Allo. The program was completed in dividing the different events. Here are the summary of the program:
Name of events:
- Assesment and Area Selection for Allo Collection And Harvesting
The In this event focused on assessment and area selection for Allo collection and harvesting, our objective is clear: to identify ecologically suitable regions where Allo thrive naturally. Through intensive field assessments and data analysis, we aim to pinpoint areas with optimal conditions for sustainable harvesting practices that minimize environmental impact. Engaging local communities ensures their perspectives and traditional knowledge contribute to our decisions, fostering mutual understanding and support. Ultimately, this initiative seeks to balance conservation efforts with the responsible utilization of Allo, promoting biodiversity conservation while supporting the livelihoods of those reliant on these natural resources.
As the result of the above study we selected Bhagwatimai RM, Mahabu RM, Naumule RM, Gurans RM and Narayan Municipality of Dailekh, Birendranagar Municipality of Birendranagar and Junichande RM of Jajarkot District.
The 17 wards of the 7 local governments from three districts were selected for Allo production and harvesting. For this desk based review and consultation with the project area were commenced.
- Coordination cum Sensitization
The Coordination cum Sensitization program was successfully completed across all seven Palikas in three districts. The first event was held on July 20, 2024, in Junichande, Jajarkot, followed by six additional events. These programs were designed to inform local stakeholders about the initiatives of Deuti Hojiyari Udhyog and Trading Center Pvt. Ltd. and the activities of USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal) in Nepal.

A 3-day skill development training was organized to introduce participants to the objectives of DHUTC and USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal), along with basic business knowledge, its advantages, and key considerations when selecting a business. - Allo Collection and Harvest Support
This event was conducted across seven palika levels and supported 40 Allo Micro-Enterprise Groups (MEGs). Each group received sickles and gloves to assist with the Allo harvesting process.
Before our assistance, the locals used sickles but did not use gloves. Local producers found it difficult to collect Allo because their hands would get burned during the Allo collection without gloves, which made the villagers lose interest in collecting Allo. In this event they received basic tools and learned that using gloves significantly eases the harvesting of Allo. This initiative aimed to improve harvesting practices and promote the sustainable use of Allo resources through proper tools and techniques.
We also planted 350 Allo plants as trail farming in Narayan Municipality-10, Dailekh.
- Fifteen Days Skill Development Training to Refine Allo Ropes
The 15-day skill development training was conducted, covering the introduction and objectives of DHUTC and USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal), as well as an in-depth overview of the Allo plant and its value chain. The training also focused on the different machines used for refining Allo fiber and making thread. Participants received basic training in refining Allo fiber and the process of making Allo thread. They also learned that the thread-making process generates two types of waste and were taught how to properly manage and dispose of them. This training aimed to equip participants with the skills to work with Allo, promoting sustainable livelihoods and the conservation of natural resources.
